THE DILEMMA
Do you remember learning. . .or have you ever given thought to the question, “What is the most efficient form of government?” Well if you haven’t then here is the short (surprising) answer: a dictatorship.
A dictator simply makes rules and instructs his military or police force to see that those rules are enforced. A very simple and straight forward process.
So if efficiency or lack of bureaucracy is the goal then turning everything over to a single despot is the answer. But of course without anyone or anything in place to contain or restrain this individual’s every whim, things can—and obviously will—get out of control.
On the other end of the scale is the Oligarchy or impossibly complex multiple level bureaucracy where no trace can be found of anyone anywhere who will claim ultimate responsibility. Sound familiar?
The dilemma is simply that we want things to improve but we’re not committed enough to the process to do anything about it. . .like vote.
Yeah, I know I’ve dealt with the VA and RR boards and DMV and IRS and DOH, etc., too. But don’t despair. It’s much worse in some other places. . .and if that’s still not comforting, know that before you’re done here you will see light (and hope) ahead.
Most governments are somewhere in between these extremes. . .including ours. But this is not about changing our government system; just about making the miracle we live in function properly.
So what is the dilemma? The dilemma is simply that we want things to improve but we’re not committed enough to the process to do anything about it. . .like vote.
But yet we do vote; on Facebook, in the newspaper, to our friends and neighbors, to our school officials or local government representatives. And of course, many do actually vote (by ballot). . .in the critical times. But not with gusto. Not with a sense of how much it matters. And certainly not with a sense of, “I’m really changing things, here.”
And heaven forbid that an election would come up at an unusual or inconvenient time. These, by the way, can very often be just what you need to be paying attention to. Not to be cynical, but that is exactly what happened in a small town where I lived in California. An issue that had failed during the major November election cycle was presented in March and passed with just the few necessary votes from the supporters since no one else was paying attention.
That’s not always the case, but just FYI.
So what is it that makes your vote count? The most famous example was the Kennedy / Nixon presidential race. The margin with which John Kennedy won amounted to a mere one vote per precinct across the nation. And then there is the famous “hanging chad” ballot count in Florida. That state’s vote was determined by a 600 vote majority…and the national vote was swung by Florida’s results.
That’s probably not going to be the case very often, but consider this: with all the apathy regarding voting in general, your group could overwhelm the system by simply agreeing to vote.
Think about it. If you’re in favor of vocational training or promoting the arts in school, get together with those of like persuasion and not only vote but encourage others to do the same. Are you a Christian, a youth advocate, a business owner or just wanting to see better use of the public lands in your community? Find out if anyone feels the same and start a movement. It’s not that difficult. Start with the same places you complain about others not doing anything: Facebook, the newspaper, your friends, associates and family, etc. Folks will vote if they think they have a chance of making a difference.
It’s called being “Solution Oriented” instead of “Problem Oriented”.
That’s just one idea. But we’re just getting started. The BIG ONE is just a few chapters away.
